Chakat Springstep is a medical doctor specialising in genetic engineering. As the director of "New You Creations", a division of the Institute for New Generation Genetics, shi used those skills to modify the testes of Karl Whitepaw to produce foxtaur-compatible sperm so that he and his mate, Pandora, could have children. As a typical chakat, shi finds family very important and went out of hir way to give the couple their dream. In return, shi asked to become more involved with the children, and declared hirself to be their godmother. Springstep, hir lifemate, Silverbrook, and their family became very close friends with Karl and Pandora's, with one of the chakat cubs, Willowind, becoming Xander's best friend, then his denmate. Although Springstep never revealed the fact to Karl, shi had fallen in love with the human because he embodied everything that a chakat finds attractive in a mate. Out of respect for Pandora's relationship though, shi settled for the occasional stolen kiss or hug until the day Karl was on his deathbed. Only then did shi confess hir love for him.
